I want to tell you about this lesson that I learned from this old Japanese man. He was probably one of the wisest and richest men that I’ve ever met.
It was back about 2-3 years ago, I had a friend of mine that was getting involved in a direct sales company. He invited me out to Los Angeles to come to their company convention, so I did.
When I got there I was really blown away with everything they had going on. The very next day, I got a chance to meet the owner of this company, who is this 76-year-old Japanese man.
When I arrived at his office, I had to wait for about an hour to speak with him so I was starting to wonder if it was worth it. My friend kept telling me, “No. You gotta meet this guy. You gotta meet this guy. Even five minutes can totally change your life and what you think.”
So I said, “Okay, fine,” and decided to wait.
Finally, I get called to go back in the owner’s office. My two friends started introducing me to this Japanese man.
“His name’s Mr. O,” they said. His wife and a translator was also in the room with us.
When Mr. O walked up to me to introduce himself, he bowed to me like they do in Japan.
“Nice to meet you.” he said,
“It’s nice to meet you too. I love your company and what you’re doing.”
They have this water technology that’s absolutely amazing.
Shortly after, I hear the translator say to me, “Mr. O has a certain feeling about you. He has something for you”.
So, this little old Japanese man walks to the other side of the room and he goes into this duffle bag and he pulls out this little, black diary. He brings it over to me and he motions to me saying, “You write me promise and then you sign it.”
This is after about two minutes of meeting the guy and he’s making me sign his journal…
So, I go into his journal and I write that I promise to share his message and his product throughout the world. Mr. O takes it and the translator translates over to him what I had written.
As he hears what I have written into his book, he gets all excited and I can see this smile come onto his face. Then, the next thing I know, he looks at me and he goes, “First, you must give and then you take”.
Right after that, he reaches into the back pocket of what seemed to be his custom Japanese suit and pulls out a wad of a hundred dollar bills, then hands it over to me with both hands saying, “First you must give and then you take.”
I remember going to the bathroom right after meeting him and just being so touched by this man’s generosity. It made me realize that there is actually good people in business and that this guy truly gives before he takes.
It’s something that I’ve always thought about as I’ve continued to live and do business. I’m always figuring out how I can first give, because once I give, I know that it’s always going to come back.
