Should You Set Big or Small Goals for Yourself?
Should you set big goals or small goals?
I know that in my growth through personal development and business, some people said you should set these big scary goals that get you really, really excited. And then other people say you should set these small little goals that are easier to obtain, so you feel progress.
So, what should you do?
In my experience, I’ve done both the big scary goals and I’ve done the little small goals, and they each have their place.
Here’s how I think about it…
I think you should have one big, huge scary vision for your life. I don’t like to call it a goal, but a vision, because I have a picture, or a movie, of what I want my life, business, relationship and everything else to be like.
Once I have my big, scary vision laid out, I break it down and say “Okay, if I want that, and that’s five years down the road, that means that I have to have five successful years. If I want to have five successful years, then that means I need to have twelve successful months each year, for five years.”
So, I always take my big vision and I chunk it down, because for me in the past, when I’ve set these big, huge goals, they seem like they’re really unattainable and that I’m not making any progress. This is because it’s so far away into the future. Since I believe ultimately progress is what makes you happy, I find breaking down the big vision works best.
Overall, I think that it really comes down to two things. First, you got to have the big vision. Second, you should break the big vision down so that way you feel you’re making progress.
That can be a monthly goal that you set each month or that could be even a daily goal that you set each day, but I think it’s important to have both and not just have one or the other. If you have just the small ones, then you’re going to lose track of what the vision is. If you just have the vision, then you’re not going to feel like you’re making any progress.
